The 48-hour forecast maps are updated in an operational mode twice a day. The products present sources and transport of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) over the eastern part of the United States with 12-km horizontal resolution. Forecasts are produced using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF), Sparse Matrix Operator Kernel Emissions (SMOKE), and Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) models to represent or approximate meteorological conditions, background emissions, and chemical transport of air pollutants. The satellite-derived estimates of biomass burning emissions are also included as an input to the CMAQ model.
