Deciding on a school is one of the most important career decisions you will make. We are proud of our programs and the achievements of both our faculty and our students. We invite you join us.
Please allow us to fill you in a little on the University, our program. Our undergraduate Earth System Science Degree is grounded on our very successful M.S. and Ph.D. programs.
Our University
The University was founded in the 1960s, and continues to grow and gain recognition. A strong research university is made even more so by the continuing pioneering achievements of its faculty (and students), and UAH’s rise to prominence has clearly been fueled by efforts such as those in the Atmospheric Science Department.

About 200 seventh graders from Hampton Cove Middle School toured the NSSTC as part of a day-long field trip to learn about careers in science, technology, engineering and math. At Cramer Hall they visited the National Weather Service Office, visited UAH's mobile severe weather research fleet, and learned a little bit about career opportunities in atmospheric science.

Tiffany Webb, a junior majoring in Earth system science, has been awarded a Research and Creative Experience for Undergraduates summer fellowship at UAHuntsville.
Her research this summer will look at ways to improve UAH's sustainability and its "green" index by studying programs at other university's and through practical measures specific to the UAHuntsville campus.
She will focus on literature review and interviews with people who are implementing programs at other campuses. She will also conduct projects using global information systems and remote sensing to address specific environmental and ecological issues at UAH, including energy efficiency, waste management, water conservation, transportation, dining and education.
Her final project will propose plans of action in those areas. The detailed proposal will include cost-benefit analyses.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for me to expand my knowledge of effective research and sustainable implementation," she said, "as well as work toward making positive changes in the Huntsville community.
"A graduate of the 2011 ESS summer study abroad program in Panama, Webb is focusing her Earth system science studies on the human dimensions track.

M.S. in Earth System Science - Starting Fall 2012.
We are excited to announce the start (Fall 2012) of a new Master's program in Earth System Science at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. This program will train the students in Climate and Environmental issues with special emphasis on GIS and Satellite Remote Sensing. Students will then work with decision makers to transition their research to policy making arenas. For further details contact Dr. Tom Sever at sever@nsstc.uah.edu.

Seven UAH Earth System Science students have been selected to participate in the DEVELOP internship for the spring semester of 2012.
The DEVELOP program is sponsored by NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, Applied Sciences program. It is a training program for students to incorporate NASA Earth Science to address local environmental and policy issues. There are three ten-week internships offered each year that coincide with the Spring, Summer, and Fall semesters. The seven UAH students accepted are Danielle Bolt, James Brenton, Kirsten Cooksy, Tiffany Keeton, Brad Barrick, Cory Manburg, and Claire Herdy. For More information about projects click here.

Don Perkey shares a few thoughts about his years at UAHuntsville (and a bug
named Ralph) at a reception in honor of his "retirement" on Dec. 1. The
first tenured faculty member in the Atmospheric Science Department, Perkey
is credited with building the undergraduate earth system science program
into a viable program with more than 60 students. He has been a member of
the faculty for 17 years, although he has been involved in research on
campus for longer than that. Although he is retiring, Perkey will continue
to advise students and teach one class a semester. |

Undergrad research to be presented in South Africa Preliminary results from an undergraduate research project that began in Panama during the summer of 2010 will be presented this fall at an international scientific conference in Cape Town, South Africa.
Zach Langford, '11 ESS, is scheduled to present two papers on the project, which involved he and two other students merging satellite images and aerial photos spanning more than 80 years to create a tool for studying erosion, deforestation and the spread of invasive plant species in Panama.

Katye Gilliland’s first scientific conference turned out to be more of an adventure than she expected when enough snow to shut down roads and the airport at a ski resort fell on Aspen, Colorado.
"It was one of the prettiest things I've ever seen," said Gilliland, a UAHuntsville sophomore majoring in Earth system science. After the Aspen airport closed, "they bused us from Aspen to Denver on closed roads."
